A New Chapter: From Crypto Creatives to Letters to Web3
Embracing Change and Exploring New Horizons
Hello friend :)
It's me, Michael from Crypto Creatives Letters to Web3 (more on that in a minute).
It’s been a hot minute since I’ve written to you. A whole year, in fact. And the entire time, a dark thought haunted me, keeping me up at night - the fear that I’d prematurely shut the door on this.
Well, that door is swinging wide open again because I’m back, baby!
But things will be changing quite a bit.
First, let's take a moment to reflect on where we've been. Crypto Creatives was born out of excitement and curiosity, with a focus on the budding web3 creator economy. It was a journey filled with promise and revolutionary excitement. But it became apparent that web3, in all its potential, is still finding its feet. The creator economy we dreamed of, powered by blockchains and NFTs, isn’t quite here yet.
This realization was further solidified during an interview with the legendary (and brilliant) Elle Griffin, who shared similar concerns about the current state of web3. That interview put things into perspective. It revealed the truth. The web3 creator economy doesn’t really exist. The tech, the adoption, just aren’t there yet. And I felt like a fraud pretending otherwise.
The bleak reality of the situation set fire to my ideological narrative, burning it all to the ground. But from the ashes of Crypto Creatives, a new vision arises…
Introducing: Letters to Web3!
Instead of narrowly focusing on the web3 creator economy, Letters to Web3 explores many interesting aspects in this exciting new digital world. We’ll leverage ideas from different fields including philosophy, anthropology, economics, history, and so much more! All to analyze and understand what the heck is happening in web3.
I can sense your curiosity: "But Michael, what does that actually mean?"
I'm glad you asked! Here’s a sneak peek of what’s on the horizon:
Rebuilding trust in a trustless society: an exploration of human behavior from an anthropological perspective, and how web3 can empower us to build a world that doesn’t suck
Analyzing the appeal behind NFTs: a deep examination of why NFTs were valuable in the first place using the philosophy of Guy Debord
Predicting the future of web3: a Hegelian analysis of web3 to (hopefully) shed light on how the industry will evolve, and integrate itself with the rest of society
The problem with play-to-earn: what Edward Deci’s Overjustification theory can teach us about building web3-native games
And literally sooo much more. This is just the beginning.
If any of these topics sound even remotely interesting to you, then I hope you’ll stick around. We’ll still explore the web3 creator economy if the opportunity presents itself, but that is no longer our bread and butter. As always, you’re free to unsubscribe. I’m sure some folks want the web3 creator economy, and only the web3 creator economy. If that’s you, no worries. I promise I won’t cry (that much) 🥹
At the end of the day, writing a newsletter is like running a startup. You have this amazing, exciting idea. You start doing the thing. But doing the thing just doesn’t work out for whatever reason. At that point, you have the option to give up and move on, or you can pivot to doing something that does work.
My friend, this is the pivot to doing something that works. And I hope you’re as excited about it as I am :)
PS: A heartfelt thank you to my friend Vane for giving me the gentle nudge I needed to take action on doing this. She also hosts an AMAZING crypto podcast, which you should listen to.
