Hello friends. Hope you’re doing great.
Today, we’re going through an action plan. Exactly how to make it as a creator in this new world.
Technology is changing all the time. This is a dynamic landscape. So, I’ve done my best to think about ways to maximize your potential to make it.
Passion and Turning pro
The Internet enabled communities for any niche obsession. This meant you could find people who were passionate about the same weird things as you.
But the problem is that having a community or audience isn’t enough for most creators. You need some kind of business model. Unfortunately, this pushes good creators to sell crap nobody needs.
Does the world really need another tacky T-shirt from an Internet creator?
Making a living as a creator is not easy. And even if you have some success, your income gets tapped by platforms and taxes.
This means most creators never try to pursue their passion. It’s a pipe dream.
The Web3 opportunity
Imagine you had the opportunity to do anything in the world and you would be successful. What would you do?
That’s the opportunity Web3 creates.
You’re still going to have to work hard and give it your all. But financial success is built into it. Whether that’s through social tokens, NFTs, or something else.
Finally, creative people can play to their natural strengths.
You can create something you care about. Use the Internet to find other people who care about it. And sell them Web3 native assets for your work.
Most of us have no idea what we really want to do. We’ve spent our entire lives domesticating ourselves to make money.
Now is the time to find what we love.
And the best way to do that is by having lots of small bats. Experiment with different genres. Topics. Styles.
You just don’t know what’s gonna work for you unless you try lots of different things.
Don’t pick things based on how much money you think you can make. Base the decision on what you’re interested in.
You’ll know you found your thing when you have the following:
Ability to consistently hit flow state
Internal satisfaction from doing it
Any amount of success
Once you have those three things, your mission is to fight resistance.
Steven Pressfield explores the idea of resistance in the War of Art. He describes resistance as the force that prevents people from doing their creative work. Resistance comes in the form of procrastination, perfectionism, and anything else that stops you from doing your work.
The only way to beat resistance is to turn pro. It doesn’t matter if you get paid or not. Your equipment and tools don’t matter either.
You’ve turned pro if you show up every day.
That’s what separates the great artists from the amateurs. If you can turn pro, you will consistently create amazing work. That’s a fact.
Turning pro isn’t easy. It’s a real struggle. But if you can sit down and do your work even if it’s just 10 minutes a day, you’ll make more progress than you believe.
Building Reputation on Web2
Alright, so you found your passion and you’ve turned pro. Great. Now is the time to build relationships. But you need a platform.
The most valuable creator platform is the one with users. After all, if no one can find your work, does it really exist?
As much as I love Web3 creator platforms, you shouldn’t be starting there. There’s no telling which platform is going to win. And it would be a real tragedy if you built a following on a platform that dies.
Build on Web2 platforms
Web2 platforms have 2 things that don’t exist in crypto yet.
Lots of users
Discovery & recommendations
Let’s be honest here. Web3 is just starting. The platforms are all young and none of them have a lot of users.
But even if they did, it’s hard to discover new people. YouTube’s discoverability helps small but good creators get found. But these new platforms don’t have that yet.
That’s why it’s important to start doing your work and publishing to Web2 platforms like YouTube, Medium, Twitter, Instagram, etc.
You’re going to be doing this work anyway. Why not get it in front of as many people as possible?
You can still acknowledge that these platforms are an unfair rip off. But until there’s a viable alternative in Web3, that’s the best we’ve got.
This will be good for you. Not only will you be building relationships with your audience, but you’ll also be honing your craft.
These platforms aren’t the best for making money. But all those people that see your work are going to give you feedback. That feedback will help you get better.
Post to Web3 Platforms
There are bound to be countless Web3 platforms for any given niche. There’s going to be a million and one YouTube clones. Blogging platforms. Instagram rip-offs.
They’re not all going to make it. That’s why you should focus on posting your content to all of them.
Mind you, this doesn’t mean every single Web3 platform. Just the platforms that work for your content. But generally, the more the merrier.
Using these platforms will give you a key insight into which ones are going to work. And since these platforms often have their own native token, you’ll be able to profit from adoption along the way.
But most importantly, you’ll be an early creator. This is going to give you a giant head start if one of these platforms goes mainstream. You’ll already have a library of content and experience creating there.
On top of that, the people who followed you on Web2 platforms will become followers on Web3. That’s an unfair advantage we all have right now.
Copy Business Models That Work
Nobody knows what’s going to be the dominant business model for creators in Web3. It’s too soon to tell. But we already have a good idea of some things that work.
The most obvious example is turning your creative work into an NFT. It’s dead simple. You make amazing work. Sell the NFT. Fans buy it.
If you’re a creator, you can use this exact formula right now.
But as the industry grows, there will be better opportunities to earn. And as long as you’re subscribed Crypto Creatives, you’ll be the first to know 😉
