Hi, I’m Michael. And this is Crypto Creatives. The best newsletter about the Crypto Creator Economy. If you’re new here, consider subscribing. 1-2 free emails a week.
People love to push themselves and solve problems. After all, that’s what we evolved to do.
But here’s the catch. Solving problems today is insanely difficult. The early Renaissance men and women are revered. If only we could be more like them.
The fact of the matter is that making contributions to science, philosophy, etc. was much easier back then. You could make common observations about everyday life and start a whole new school of thought.
That’s not going to fly today. You’ll need to spend decades of your life mastering your trade. And only then will you even have a chance of a breakthrough.
And the worst part? It’s a real pain in the ass to do that.
Barriers to Entry
Academia is notoriously exclusive. You have to pay thousands of dollars and waste years of your life getting started. It sucks.
I know someone who went down this route. It’s not a path I envy.
They’ve been living below the poverty line for years
All their time goes to class & research (that someone else will get credit for)
They’ll graduate with mountains of debt
Not to mention all the other bs in academia
And for all that sacrifice, they stand a chance at making a real contribution to science. If they can find time to do that between teaching college classes.
Oh, but it gets worse.
If their great discovery happens in their lifetime, the employer will most likely capture most of the upside. Whether that’s the university or a company.
Yes, seriously.
Does that not sound like bullshit to you?
It boggles my mind how we push our brightest minds into such a scam. There’s no other way to describe it than a Ponzi scheme.
Thankfully, there’s a better option for ambitious smart people.
Web3 University
Crypto is the complete opposite of academia. All the information is free. If you have the time and energy, you can become an industry expert in a few years.
Vitalik Buterin publishes everything he writes for free. You can go on his profile and look at the code yourself.
None of that paying $200 to read an academic article.
My favorite example is Hayden Adams. He had zero experience in computer science or programming. But he took some time off work to learn Solidity.
And it wasn’t long before he created Uniswap. One of the most innovative crypto projects in the world.
The only barrier to entry is your willingness to learn.
Final Thoughts
Smart people who want to solve problems will naturally gravitate toward Web3. Why on earth would they even consider legacy academia?
And with the greatest minds, innovation is bound to happen.
This industry will change the world more than legacy academia ever could.
